The Wine Bar: Hang out like a local

Since its opening a year or so ago, Vino Tiempo – known simply ‘the Wine Bar’ or ‘VT’ – has been a popular hang-out for residents of Provo. Its central location, chic ambiance, and creative food and drink menu offers a great new option for the laid back nightlife scene here.  It’s got a nice floor space and cool round bar. People like the various nooks and corners of the well-designed and comfortable interior where you can have small meet-ups with friends in the comfy couches, or power meetings for business. And the outdoor space is great all year around for a night out of socializing and people watching.

As its name implies, Vino Tiempo features an extensive wine list. Local wine connoisseur Tony Garland and his staff scour the world for interesting vintages. They even have a cool automated wine machine that lets you buy a credit-card like card ($50) and insert it in a dispenser that pours a tasting (or more!) of one of the new wines they are featuring. Of course, wine by the glass and bottle are also available from the bar and VT has a modern-looking glass enclosed wine cellar for your viewing pleasure as well (also check out the ‘private boxes’ in the corner of the bar where people keep their own private stash of wine, booze, cigars and who knows what else in little lockers with their names engraved on them).

The Wine Bar is more than just wine, though – it has a great menu too – tapas style small plates of all sorts of delicious inventions from Chef Peter. The staff, led by the newlywed Molly the Magnificent, is always friendly and helpful and can assist in creating the right selections for your tastes.

I like the outside space the best at Vino Tiempo. It’s in the middle of a little shopping area called The Regent Village, so don’t expect great views (good shopping, yes!). But it’s turned into a bit of a social mecca, and combined with The Vix Restaurant next door, creates a lot of foot traffic. A couple times of year they block of the little street and do events with live music. And VT also has live music performances inside some nights. Check their Facebook page for more info.

Sitting at the bar is fun, too, and a good place to catch up on the latest news. And you never know who might wander in. A few weeks ago music great Stevie Wonder appeared out of nowhere. Such is life in TCI, a favorite spot for the rich and famous!

Vino Tiempo stays open pretty late if there’s a good crowd or a party going on, which usually there is on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. It’s also a great after-work stop, and they are open for lunch, too. For tourists, it’s a nice chance to mingle with locals and its right in the middle of Grace Bay, so within easy walking distance from most of the resorts, or a short taxi ride from the rest.

The Wine Bar is a little slice of a big city in our little island community. You’ll feel like you’re in South Beach or SoHo, but of course the world’s best beach is just a stone’s throw away. If you go, tell ‘em I sent ya – and try the Chilean Pinot.
